Chiefs bolster their defense with Derrick Nnadi
The Kansas City Chiefs have secured experienced defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi through a trade with the New York Jets. The deal, revealed by sources close to the matter, includes an exchange of draft picks for the year 2027.
In the transaction, the Chiefs will receive a conditional seventh-round pick, in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick.
The need for a veteran interior lineman for the early plays was pressing for the Chiefs. In addition, there was a risk that the Jets would trade Nnadi to another team before the deadline to reduce NFL rosters.
Nnadi, who previously played his entire seven-year career with the Chiefs before joining the Jets as a free agent, was available due to the high probability of not being included on the Jets’ roster.
During the preseason, Nnadi participated in 66 defensive plays and achieved five tackles. The arrival of defensive tackles Harrison Phillips and Jovon Briggs, acquired in trades last week, made Nnadi expendable for the Jets.
In his previous stint with the Chiefs, Nnadi contributed to the conquest of three Super Bowls and stood out for his resilience, participating in 115 games.
Although he is not expected to be a starter, Nnadi will play as a rotational defensive lineman, often alongside Chris Jones, the Chiefs’ best pass rusher.
Last week, the Chiefs also traded wide receiver Skyy Moore, who was not going to be part of the team, to the San Francisco 49ers, in exchange for a swap of late-round draft picks for 2027.
With this recent addition, the Chiefs have essentially used the Skyy Moore trade to facilitate Nnadi’s arrival.
