In the world of American football, specifically in the Kansas City Chiefs, the contractual situation of their outstanding cornerback, Trent McDuffie, has generated interest. According to sources close to the situation, it is not expected that the player and the team will reach an agreement for a multi-year contract extension before the start of the season.
Over the last six weeks, the Chiefs have been in talks with McDuffie, a two-time All-Pro, with the goal of negotiating an extension. The player, who is about to begin his fourth season in the NFL, is shaping up to be one of the team’s defensive pillars, second only to Chris Jones.
McDuffie himself has acknowledged that he will play this season under his rookie contract. His base salary for this year is $2,613,066. The player has expressed his focus on the season and on Friday’s game, setting aside contractual concerns for the following offseason.
Last season, McDuffie had an outstanding performance, recording career highs in interceptions and passes defended, along with a good number of tackles and quarterback hits. His coverage ability and resilience are standout features.
The Chiefs’ general manager, Brett Veach, has acknowledged McDuffie’s value to the team and has confirmed that conversations will continue to reach an agreement. In July, the New York Jets signed Sauce Gardner to a record contract extension, setting a benchmark for potential deals with prominent cornerbacks.
McDuffie was Veach’s highest selection since he took over as general manager in 2017. The Chiefs acquired him in the 2022 draft, after a trade involving Tyreek Hill. The 2022 draft class, which included McDuffie, has been fundamental to the team’s recent success.
In April, the Chiefs exercised the fifth-year option on McDuffie’s contract, securing his salary for 2026. The player has expressed his satisfaction with playing for the Chiefs. Although Friday’s game is important, Veach has indicated that negotiations will continue during the season. If an agreement is not reached, the Chiefs could use the franchise tag on McDuffie in 2027.
