In an unexpected turn for Kansas City fans, it has been revealed that the Chiefs and Trent McDuffie, their standout cornerback, will not reach an agreement for a multi-year contract extension before the start of the season.

During the last six weeks, the Chiefs have been in talks with McDuffie, a two-time All-Pro player, in an attempt to negotiate an extension. McDuffie, 24, is considered the second-best defender on the team, second only to Chris Jones.

Before Sunday’s practice, McDuffie indicated that he expects to play this season under the rookie contract, with a base salary of $2,613,066. “Right now, it’s about the season and Friday’s game. I’m not too worried about the contract. That can wait until next offseason. We’re going to go out there and have a great year,” McDuffie commented.

McDuffie is coming off his best season, where he recorded two interceptions and 13 passes defended, both personal records, in addition to 59 tackles, four quarterback hits, and a forced fumble. His coverage ability and durability have made him a key player.

The Chiefs’ general manager, Brett Veach, acknowledged that they have maintained a constant dialogue with McDuffie, highlighting his importance to the team. “He’s a special player. We’re going to keep talking and we hope something gets resolved. Trent is a priority,” Veach stated.

In July, the New York Jets signed Sauce Gardner to a record four-year, $120.4 million extension, which would have set a precedent for McDuffie, who would have to surpass that figure to become the league’s highest-paid cornerback.

McDuffie was Veach’s highest selection since taking office in 2017. The Chiefs acquired him in 2022 after the Tyreek Hill trade, and he has been a starter ever since.

The 2022 draft class, including McDuffie, has been fundamental to the Chiefs’ recent success, who have won consecutive championships and reached the final for the third consecutive time. In 10 postseason games, McDuffie has accumulated 13 passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

In April, the Chiefs exercised the fifth-year option on McDuffie’s contract, guaranteeing his $13.6 million salary for 2026.

Veach has indicated that negotiations with McDuffie will continue during the season. If an agreement is not reached, the Chiefs could use the franchise tag in 2027, which would prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
