Los Angeles Chargers: Preseason Analysis and Renewed Expectations

Last year, Jim Harbaugh’s arrival at the [Los Angeles Chargers](/nfl/team/_/name/lac/los-angeles-chargers) generated a wave of enthusiasm in the city, even eclipsing figures like Shohei Ohtani and LeBron James. The fans embraced Harbaugh, but a year later, after a season with ups and downs and a painful playoff defeat, the initial euphoria has given way to a deeper determination. Although the fascination with the new coach has diminished, the demands of the Chargers have increased. Now, the team seeks to consolidate its performance and exceed established expectations.

“I feel like last year laid the foundation for this group… We have everything we need to achieve our goals,” safety Derwin James Jr. commented.

Three Key Points of the Chargers’ Preseason

1. Justin Herbert: Optimism on Offense

The offense was the Achilles’ heel of the Chargers last season, with Herbert facing unprecedented challenges in his career. However, the incorporation of new receivers and the improvement in the offensive line promise a significant change. The connection with Ladd McConkey was a bright spot, and the team has reinforced its receiving corps with players like Tre’ Harris, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and Oronde Gadsden II. The return of Mike Williams, one of Herbert’s favorite targets, is a key reinforcement. Herbert has expressed his confidence in the improvement of the attack, highlighting the progress made during the preseason. With Greg Roman back as offensive coordinator for the second consecutive year, greater consistency is expected.

2. Daiyan Henley: A Year of Consolidation

Daiyan Henley, selected in the third round in 2023, had an outstanding season in 2024, establishing himself as one of the most important players on the Chargers’ defense. Despite playing with a labrum injury, Henley finished among the NFL leaders in tackles. Both players and coaches expect Henley to become one of the best linebackers in the league. Henley is expected to continue working on his technique and coverage skills along with James and Khalil Mack.

“I want him to do everything because I feel like he has the potential to be All-Pro, not just Pro Bowl, but an All-Pro player,” James said about Henley.

3. Khalil Mack: The Return of a Leader

Khalil Mack, after considering retirement, decided to return to the Chargers. His return, with a one-year contract, was received with joy, especially by defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and Derwin James. Mack, who has yet to win a playoff game in his career, returns with the ambition of winning a Super Bowl in Los Angeles.
