Cameron Ward and the Titan Offense Struggle in Second Preseason Game

The second preseason game was not favorable for the young quarterback Cameron Ward and the starting offense of the Tennessee Titans, who faced the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night.

Ward only completed two of his seven pass attempts, accumulating 42 yards, in the Titans’ 23-20 victory. Titans coach Brian Callahan initially planned for Ward to play two series. However, the situation changed following the offense’s uneven performance in the first two series.

I wanted to send them back on the field. I think the number of plays was still low. Penalties took us out of some favorable situations and we didn’t convert on third downs, so we wanted to give them one more series because the play count was still relatively low. I felt it was good for him to go back out there.

One of Ward’s best passes, directed to veteran receiver Van Jefferson, didn’t materialize, which would have meant a significant gain and would have placed the Titans on the Falcons’ 30-yard line in the first series. Ward had tried to convince Callahan to give him a third series the previous week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The player was pleased to have an additional series on Friday.

It’s more reps for me. The most important thing is to make things difficult for myself in practice for when I have real pressure. With time, I will keep improving every week.

The Titans capped off a productive week of joint practices with Friday’s victory. Ward had to play without starting receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett, who rested. Ward highlighted Ridley’s competitiveness with Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr. during the week and prepares to conclude the preseason at home against the Minnesota Vikings.

I felt really good seeing players like A.J. Terrell and Ridley. I think that connection was only going to get better, between Rid and me, along with the other receivers. I’m excited to see where we can go. I look forward to next week, playing against a good Minnesota defense.
