Caleb Williams Downplays Viral Training Video

The Chicago Bears quarterback, Caleb Williams, downplayed a viral video of a training session in which he was seen missing passes to a net. Williams, with a smile, downplayed the situation on Thursday.

“I look at it and laugh at them, as always,” Williams said. “We’re here working. We’re grinding. We’re competing, and that’s one of the exercises we were competing in.”

Williams explained that the exercise, shown in the video, is designed to improve the speed of ball delivery. The goal is to catch the ball, without worrying about the laces, and throw it as quickly as possible to the lower left corner of the net. The video showed Williams missing four consecutive throws, which generated a reaction that, according to him, was misinterpreted. Williams clarified that his reaction was a joke.

“We have a rule in our quarterback room… if you miss the board, you have to do something funny or something like that,” Williams explained. “We’ve had some competition in those areas as well. It’s something fun, something competitive. I was competing and I missed, and that was the fake anger I showed. That’s what you do, you compete with your friends and something like that happens, maybe you say a few words, choice words after losing to your friends”.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles also downplayed the video and Williams’ reaction. Despite the Bears’ offense showing inconsistent moments while learning a new scheme under coach Ben Johnson, Poles expressed satisfaction with Williams’ progress.

“I really think it’s great,” Poles said. “I knew there was some bad practice. I’ve seen clips on Twitter. I didn’t know it was a national crisis of Caleb struggling.”

The Bears are scheduled to have a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Friday at Halas Hall, before their first preseason game against Miami on Sunday. Williams said he doesn’t yet know if he will play in that game and that he hasn’t spoken with Johnson about his plan for the quarterback in the preseason games.
