CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn shared a play he heard from Bryce Young with the rest of the defense during the first day of the three-day mandatory minicamp. Young didn’t react well. The normally calm quarterback was upset, yelling at Horn that he shouldn’t do that, urging him to believe in himself. The discussion lasted more than 10 seconds. This behavior is something that the first pick of the 2023 NFL draft had rarely shown in his first two years in the league, at least in front of the media.

He’s talking a lot more this year. He’s talking trash every day.

The moment reminded me of the 2015 Panthers, when Cam Newton and Josh Norman used to exchange taunts daily. The exchange of words between Young and Horn, with Davis and other 2015 players present, was far from starting a fight, and the Panthers are far from reaching the playoffs after seven consecutive losing seasons. However, Horn and others believe that the excitement, especially from Young, is a sign of change.

The guys are tired of being the same old Carolina Panthers. We want to get back to what they did here in the past, from ’15 and some of those other years when they went far in the playoffs, when they involved the fans and the city was excited. That shows that the guys are tired of the same old thing.

Horn believes that provocations bring the team closer.

When I talk trash to the receivers and to Bryce, it’s like brotherly love, almost like you get close through that. It’s almost like fighting with your brother every day at home, and as soon as they go to the mall, nobody else can say anything, because you’re going to defend him.

NFL second-year coach Dave Canales said he loves the new energy of Young and others, and that the players are “attacking each other”.

He simply has a challenge within himself. That’s his way of competing. He’s not very animated with it, but he definitely feeds off of that, feeds off of that energy. He takes advantage of opportunities when he can, because Jaycee is trying to lure him to throw the ball there.

Horn called this a sign of progress.

If you have a guy dominating you in every practice, talking trash, you’ll have no choice but to go hard and go after him or get into a hole. Many of the guys out there aren’t going to do that.
