Bernie Kosar Discharged After Liver Transplant
Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar announced on social media his hospital discharge this Monday, just one week after undergoing a liver transplant. Kosar, who was on the waiting list for more than a year, shared the news in a post on X.In his post, Kosar congratulated Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders on his first NFL start. “Blessed to be discharged today, and grateful for all the support that has brought me to this point. Just in time for my birthday tomorrow!”, Kosar wrote. Kosar will turn 62 this Tuesday. Kosar revealed in a text message that he was originally scheduled to be discharged next month and will leave the hospital just in time “to watch Monday Night Football”. A University Hospitals spokesperson stated last week that, “as with all organ donations, we are honored and amazed by the generosity of the donor and their family”, but “due to confidentiality laws, we cannot provide additional details about the donor”. However, the donor has been identified as Bryce Dunlap, a 21-year-old Browns fan, who suffered a medical emergency and subsequently passed away.Last year, Kosar revealed that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease. Kosar played for the Browns from 1985 to 1993, leading the team to three AFC Championship appearances (1986, ’87, and ’89), losing on each occasion to the Denver Broncos. Kosar ranks third in franchise history with 21,904 passing yards. After being released by the Browns, Kosar joined the Dallas Cowboys for the remainder of the 1993 season and earned a Super Bowl ring. He then played for the Miami Dolphins from 1994 to 1996.“That’s probably the biggest difficulty right now. We’re still going through this with heavy hearts for what happened to Bryce Dunlap and his family. I can’t express to you how much my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can’t thank you enough. I’m not taking this gift for granted,” Kosar said.
