Jarrett Stidham Will Take Over as Broncos’ Starter Following Bo Nix Injury

Following confirmation that Bo Nix will miss the rest of the season due to a broken ankle, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton expressed his full confidence in Jarrett Stidham, the backup quarterback. Stidham will be the starter in the next AFC championship game against the New England Patriots. Payton highlighted Stidham’s preparation, mentioning his experience and previous training in New England. The coach emphasized that Stidham is ready for his first postseason moment. Stidham, who arrived at the Broncos as a free agent in 2023, has had little participation in the current season, but Payton trusts his ability. The coach recalled Stidham’s performance in the last two games of the 2023 season, where he threw two touchdowns and one interception. Sam Ehlinger, who has been on the Broncos’ practice squad, will be Stidham’s backup. In addition, the team is signing veteran Ben DiNucci to their practice squad. Payton dismissed the idea that quarterbacks split practice reps during the regular season and emphasized that Stidham has stayed in shape thanks to daily competition against the Broncos’ starting defense. The coach highlighted Stidham’s precision and understanding of the game.

“One of Stiddy’s strengths is his mental aptitude, his progressions, and his understanding of the plays.”

Payton cited examples of success from backup quarterbacks in important roles, such as Teddy Bridgewater and Davis Mills, to support his confidence in Stidham. The coach added that the Broncos staff will begin game planning in earnest on Sunday night. Nix’s injury occurred during the game against the Buffalo Bills, where he suffered a broken ankle. Payton recounted how Nix informed him about the injury after the quarterback tried to return to the game.
