J.K. Dobbins Offseason with the Broncos

Denver Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins will not be able to help the team revitalize its offense for the remainder of the season. Dobbins was placed on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday. The injury, suffered in the third quarter of the victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, already required surgery. Although Dobbins hoped for good news, the player has not been able to train since then. This situation leaves the Broncos without their main running back for Sunday’s crucial game against the Kansas City Chiefs. There is a possibility that Dobbins could return if the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl.

This is probably the best team I’ve been on, and we owe it to the fans, we owe it to ourselves, to stop playing the way we’re playing. We have to improve; we simply have to improve.

J.K. Dobbins
Dobbins, with 772 rushing yards and an average of 5.05 yards per carry this season, was among the league’s most prominent running backs. His 21 runs of at least 10 yards place him at the top of the NFL. Dobbins’ injury opens the door for rookie RJ Harvey, selected in the second round of the draft by the Broncos. Harvey has shown his potential with 214 yards on 50 carries and 25 receptions, including the team’s longest run this season, of 50 yards.

I’m definitely excited to show my ability to run… [but] I’ll do whatever coach [Payton] wants me to do.

In addition to his skill as a runner, Dobbins was valued by coaches as the most reliable running back in pass protection. The Broncos will also have Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie in the rotation. Badie has participated in special formations and in long yardage situations. McLaughlin, who surpassed 400 rushing yards in the previous two seasons, has only had one carry this season. “He’s ready,” Payton said. “It would be hard to play for two seasons and then be inactive. He’s one of those guys. He’s the first one in the building… He’ll walk through the [practice] script and then he’ll work out and be eating breakfast when people are just arriving.” Sean Payton The Broncos will also have important absences in Sunday’s game. Linebacker Alex Singleton, the team’s leading tackler, and Pat Surtain II, Defensive Player of the Year, are also ruled out. Singleton underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, and Surtain will miss his third game due to a pectoral injury. In addition, the team will be without Jonah Elliss (hamstring) and Nate Adkins (knee). The good news for the Broncos is the return of wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., who has practiced all week and is ready to play against Kansas City after missing two games due to a concussion.
