Texans Secure Folorunso Fatukasi to Bolster Defense
The Houston Texans have reached an agreement to renew the contract of defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi, according to sources close to the team.
Fatukasi, 30, started 11 games for the Texans last season. His presence was key to the team’s run defense, which ranked ninth in yards allowed (107) and eighth in yards per attempt (4.2).
Although Fatukasi is not known for his ability to pressure the quarterback, with only one sack last season and 5.5 in his career, his impact on run defense is undeniable. He led the Texans’ defense in run stop rate (4.8%) and tied for third in run stop tackles (eight), according to Next Gen Stats data.
Fatukasi returns to a defensive line that already has important players like Mario Edwards Jr., Sheldon Rankins, Tim Settle Jr., and Denico Autry.
The Texans signed Fatukasi last March, after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2018 draft by the New York Jets, Fatukasi has accumulated 187 tackles (27 for loss of yards) and 22 quarterback hits in his seven seasons in the NFL.
