Bo Nix Seeks Excellence: Visits Drew Brees to Hone His Game

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has demonstrated his commitment to continuous improvement, according to coach Sean Payton. Nix has spent a week with Drew Brees, who made NFL history playing in the same offense.

“Nix is someone who works hard and wants to improve,” Payton said. “He has visited Brees for four or five days… there is a lot he wants to absorb in a short period of time, and that’s a great thing for a young player like him.”

Brees, a 13-time Pro Bowl player, played 15 of his 20 NFL seasons in Payton’s offense with the New Orleans Saints. He led the league in passing yards seven times, had a record five 5,000-yard passing seasons, and is one of only two quarterbacks in league history (along with Tom Brady) to surpass 80,000 career passing yards (80,358). Nix started every game of his rookie season in 2024, and the Broncos ended an eight-year playoff drought, although they lost in the wild card round against the Bills in Buffalo. Nix was the first rookie to start a regular season game for the Broncos since John Elway in 1983, and he finished his rookie season with 29 touchdowns, just two short of Justin Herbert’s rookie record. Payton explained that Nix sought out Brees and spent a week in San Diego with him.

“It was an approach, coordinating a time to delve into the offense,” Payton said. “That’s what you’re looking for… wanting to know more about the offense. It was Nix doing more research on the position.”

Nix had previously commented that, as a rookie, he found it can be difficult to work on position mechanics during the season, as he prepared for specific opponents each week. He hopes to utilize the offseason time as efficiently as possible. “You can focus on the things you want to improve,” Nix said. “You can go out and improve and work on your craft.” Bo Nix Payton also reacted to any narrative about a possible “sophomore slump” for Nix in his second year as a starter. Payton said he didn’t know many examples of rookie quarterbacks who excelled and then suffered a slump in their second year.
