Belichick Dismisses Giants: Focused on North Carolina and College Football

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick announced this Friday that he will not seek any head coaching vacancies in the NFL. Belichick’s statement comes after rumors linking him to the vacant coaching position at the New York Giants. After the Giants fired Brian Daboll on Monday, Belichick’s name began to be mentioned for the vacant position.

Despite the circulating rumors, I have not sought nor will I seek any head coaching vacancy in the NFL.

Before reaching college football, Belichick developed his entire career in the NFL, where he won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. In addition, he won two Super Bowls with the Giants as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells in the 1986 and 1990 seasons. Belichick expressed his respect and affection for the New York Giants organization and the Mara and Tisch families.

The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my career as a coach. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade.

Belichick is in his first season with North Carolina, which has won two consecutive games, leaving their record at 4-5. In a press conference on Tuesday, he was asked about speculation related to the Giants and reiterated his focus on Saturday’s game against Wake Forest. In his statement on Friday, he also reiterated his commitment to North Carolina.

We have tremendous support from the university, our alumni, and the entire Carolina community. My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop our players, and build a program that will make Tar Heel fans proud.
