Tremaine Edmunds cleared to seek a trade
The Chicago Bears have given linebacker Tremaine Edmunds permission to explore the possibility of a trade, according to sources close to the team. Edmunds, 27, is entering the final season of the four-year, $72 million contract he signed with the Bears as a free agent in 2023. His contract includes a base salary of $13.9 million for 2026, with a $1 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. His cap hit is $17.9 million. If Edmunds can’t find a team willing to trade for him, he could become a salary cap casualty. Releasing Edmunds would generate $15 million in cap space for Chicago.Poles added: “If it’s a transfer, a release, there are many different options that… or few options that we can follow to create some space. But as I said before, this is a unique situation where we have put our roster in a position where we have many talented players, many well-paid players, and that imposes some restrictions on the salary cap. So we have to make difficult decisions. And, you know, as I said, when we win games, you create these relationships. There are leaders or players who were captains who mean a lot to our organization. But when you are cornered…” Edmunds led the Bears with 112 tackles last season, in addition to nine passes defended, four interceptions, one sack, and one fumble recovery, despite missing four games with a groin injury. He also added 13 tackles in Chicago’s two playoff games. Selected in the first round by the Buffalo Bills in 2018, Edmunds has recorded at least 102 tackles in each of his eight seasons in the NFL.There are a couple of players we have to make decisions on.
