Anthony Richardson will lead the Colts in the preseason opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Indianapolis Colts will begin their preseason with Anthony Richardson Sr. as the starting quarterback in the game against the Baltimore Ravens. This will be the next step in the battle for the starting position that the team is holding between Richardson and Daniel Jones. Coach Shane Steichen made the announcement after Tuesday’s joint practice at the Ravens’ training facilities. During practice, both quarterbacks showed a good performance against Baltimore’s defense. According to Steichen, the decision is part of a plan to evaluate both quarterbacks in practices, joint scrimmages, and preseason games before deciding on the starter. Jones will be the starter in the second preseason game, on August 16, against the Green Bay Packers in Indianapolis. Richardson will play approximately “a quarter and a half” against the Ravens, while Jones is expected to play around “half a quarter.” The Colts will be without some key starters, so Richardson will not have all of his offensive and lineman players available. The Ravens are also not expected to play their starters. Tuesday’s practice didn’t make a big difference between the quarterbacks, but it was encouraging.

I thought some really good things were done on offense. Both quarterbacks did some really good things.

Shane Steichen
Steichen has committed to not rushing the decision and has expressed his willingness to wait until after the preseason to choose the starter. Richardson has been the Colts’ starter for the last two seasons, but he has struggled with consistency, completing 50.6% of his career passes. He has also been affected by injuries, missing 17 games due to various ailments. On the other hand, Jones was demoted as the starter for the New York Giants and subsequently released last season. He signed a one-year, $14 million contract with Indianapolis, where he seeks to revitalize his career.
