Aaron Rodgers Faces the Future with Uncertainty in Pittsburgh

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is focused on the crucial Week 18 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, not thinking about his future beyond this season. Rodgers, who arrived in Pittsburgh with a one-year contract, has stated that he has not considered his return to the team for next season. However, he acknowledges the reality he will face at the end of the campaign.

I’m thinking about this week, but obviously I’m 42 years old and I’m under a one-year contract. So you know what the situation is. When the season is over, I’ll be a free agent. That will give me many options if I still want to play.

In June, Rodgers commented that he was “almost certain” that the 2025 season would be his last. He looked back on his 20-year career, highlighting the experience in Pittsburgh as something “better than he expected.” Rodgers has praised coach Mike Tomlin and expressed his gratitude for the experience in Pittsburgh. The quarterback also mentioned that he will talk to his wife to make decisions about his next steps, hoping that his choice will be based on the desire to continue playing, rather than his physical ability. Since his arrival in Pittsburgh, Rodgers has propelled the Steelers to a 9-7 record, keeping them in contention for the AFC North title. He has thrown for 3,028 yards with 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, with a 65.6% completion rate. Rodgers acknowledged that, at times, he hasn’t played at the level he expected, especially in the first year with a new offense, but highlighted the growth and continuous improvement. The “all or nothing” situation against Baltimore is due, in part, to Rodgers’ performance without receiver DK Metcalf against Cleveland in Week 17. Rodgers completed only 53.8% of his passes for 168 yards. Rodgers, confident in his approach, expects an outstanding performance every week, maintaining the same mindset and process, regardless of the results.
