The 49ers Bolster Their Defensive Line with the Acquisition of Osa Odighizuwa
In a bold move to strengthen their defense, the San Francisco 49ers have acquired defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from the Dallas Cowboys, as announced by the team’s management. This transaction underscores the 49ers’ priority of improving their pass-rushing ability, especially on the defensive line. The agreement was finalized in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 draft (number 92). Odighizuwa’s arrival promises a significant boost to the 49ers’ ability to generate pressure, an aspect in which the team notably faltered in the 2025 season. The numbers from last season reveal the urgency of this improvement: San Francisco finished last in the NFL in sacks (20), ranked 31st in pressures, and 29th in quarterback pressure win percentage (29.2%). The situation was even more concerning inside the defensive line, where the players only recorded 4.5 sacks. The departure of Jordan Elliott, who signed with the Tennessee Titans, and the decision not to extend an offer to Kalia Davis, who became a restricted free agent, accentuated the need to reinforce this position. In the 2025 season, Odighizuwa accumulated 3.5 sacks, but stood out among defensive tackles by leading in quarterback hits (23), ranking fifth in pressure win percentage (10%), and twentieth in pressure rate (5.7%). The player is under contract until 2028, with guaranteed base salaries of $16.25 million in 2026 and $20 million in each of the following two seasons. Odighizuwa is expected to take on an important role on San Francisco’s defensive line, where he will join young players Alfred Collins and C.J. West. Last March, the Cowboys signed Odighizuwa to a four-year, $80 million contract, which included $39 million guaranteed at the time of signing and $52 million guaranteed in total. Dallas will take on $16 million in dead money, which will free up $4.75 million in salary cap space. Before this transaction, the Cowboys had also made significant moves, including the transfer of Solomon Thomas to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a seventh-round pick. This series of moves indicates a strategic restructuring by the Cowboys, who now have three selections within the first 100 draft positions.Odighizuwa had been a key player in the Cowboys’ defense, and his arrival represents a valuable addition for the 49ers.
