Wembanyama aims for MVP: “I should lead the race”

Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs star, has openly expressed his ambition to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award this season.

After securing the Southwest Division title with his team, Wembanyama detailed his arguments for being considered the MVP. This happened after the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat with a score of 136-111, achieving their 22nd victory in the last 24 games.

“I’ve thought about it. I think there’s a debate right now. There should be, although I think I should be leading the race. I’m trying to make sure there’s no debate at the end of the season,” Wembanyama said.

Wembanyama averages impressive numbers: 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game. Only six other players in NBA history have achieved similar figures in a season, including legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing, and David Robinson. Wembanyama also achieved these numbers last season, although in only 46 games. Currently, the main favorite for the award is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers, the league’s leading scorer, and Wembanyama, who is in third place, follow him in the betting. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson also backs Wembanyama’s candidacy, highlighting his impact on all aspects of the game.

“It affects the game in every way, on the court, on both ends, with and without the ball, what the other team tries to do, plan, schematize, adjust, on both sides of basketball, in my very ignorant opinion, as much as any other player I’ve seen,” Johnson commented.

The Spurs, with a record of 54-18, are emerging as one of the leading teams in the Western Conference, which increases Wembanyama’s chances. At 22 years old and with an exemplary work ethic, the French player has become the face of the franchise. Wembanyama, who won the Rookie of the Year award two seasons ago, has a three-point campaign to support his MVP candidacy.
  • Defense is 50% of the game and is undervalued in the MVP race, and he considers himself the most impactful defensive player in the league.
  • The Spurs almost swept the Oklahoma City Thunder in the season, dominating them on three occasions.
  • Offensive impact is not limited to points alone.
The player aims to eliminate any doubt about his potential to win the MVP at the end of the season.
