The second-round series between the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves tips off this Wednesday night.
The Warriors, seeded number 7, arrive after a Game 7 victory against the Houston Rockets on Sunday. For their part, the Timberwolves, seeded number 6, eliminated the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 on Wednesday.
This is the third time that the number 6 and 7 seeds of a conference have faced each other in a series since seeding began in 1984. The other two series were the 2023 series between the Warriors and Lakers, and the 1987 series between the Rockets and the Seattle SuperSonics.
It’s the first time Golden State and Minnesota face each other in the postseason. Golden State won three of the four games against Minnesota during the regular season, although all were played before the Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat in February.
Butler knows his rival well, having played 69 games with the Timberwolves and being an All-Star with the team in the 2017-18 season. Butler was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in November 2018 after a trade request and a heated practice.
