Jayson Tatum takes a significant step in his recovery

Jayson Tatum’s recovery, after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in May, has taken a significant step. The Boston Celtics player was assigned to practice with their affiliated G League team. According to a statement from the Celtics, Tatum will participate in practice sessions at the Auerbach Center in Boston alongside teammates Hugo Gonzalez and Amari Williams, who were also assigned to the Maine G League team. After the session, Tatum will be called back by the Celtics to continue his rehabilitation. The team did not offer additional details about a possible return timeline for Tatum. Tatum suffered the Achilles tendon injury during the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks last May. Despite his absence, the Celtics have performed well, with a record of 34-19, ranking third in the Eastern Conference. Last week, when asked about his return, Tatum questioned whether it could affect the team’s chemistry.

“That’s something I consider every day,” Tatum said on “The Pivot” podcast. “They’ve played more than 50 games without me. So they have an identity this year, or things they feel have worked for them, and it’s been successful.

Brad Stevens, Celtics’ president of basketball operations, assured Tatum that the team is better with him.

Obviously, any team with Jayson Tatum is going to be better,” Stevens said on Friday. “If you need me to, I’ll tell you that every day. Because every team, all 30 of us, would be much, much better with him on the team.
