Star player Luka Doncic is already making moves to strengthen his team before the start of the season. Marcus Smart, in his introductory press conference with the team, revealed that Doncic was fundamental to his arrival.
Smart, after reaching a contract buyout agreement with the Washington Wizards, signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the team. To make room, the team waived Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin. Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Defense first team member, is expected to strengthen the perimeter defense, especially after the departure of Dorian Finney-Smith. With 108 playoff games under his belt, an experience he shares with Mike Conley, his arrival is valuable for a team that has added Doncic and has JJ Redick as coach. Smart, when asked about his role, responded that he will be true to his style. When you have a guy like Luka calling… asking for you, trying to see where you are, to see if you want to join something special that he’s trying to create here. For him to say that he can really use my help, that meant a lot.

Doncic’s involvement in Smart’s arrival is a good indication of his long-term commitment to the franchise. Doncic has two years left on his contract, with a player option for the 2026-27 season. The Lakers can offer him a four-year, $222 million extension starting August 2nd. Smart is one of the four new players joining the team this offseason, along with Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, and Adou Thiero. Smart also expressed his confidence that the team will compete in the Western Conference, which is expected to be very competitive in the 2025-26 season.Just being me. Coming and doing what I do, which is being a tenacious defender, just bringing the intensity that I bring, my leadership, my basketball IQ as well. But just being the pest that I’ve always been.
Marcus Smart
After spending nine years with the Boston Celtics, Smart has played 54 games in the last two seasons due to injuries.I think we’re up there with the best. And I think we can compete. Our ceiling is high. I think there’s no ceiling. I think if we all focus and come to do what we’re supposed to do, we can have a very good opportunity.
Marcus Smart
I am very motivated. The last two years for me were, in my opinion, a disappointment. Injuries held me back and set me back. But, as I told my wife and family, everything happens for a reason. And it’s funny that 12 years ago, I could have been here and now it’s a full circle and I am here.
