Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dethrones Wilt Chamberlain and sets a new NBA record

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has broken a historic NBA record held by the legend Wilt Chamberlain for over six decades. Gilgeous-Alexander, the current MVP, managed to score at least 20 points in 127 consecutive regular season games, surpassing Chamberlain’s mark. The milestone was reached in Thursday’s game against the Boston Celtics, where Gilgeous-Alexander surpassed 20 points with a jump shot from 20 feet away, with 7:04 left to finish the third quarter. The Paycom Center crowd reacted with a standing ovation and “MVP” chants during the next timeout.

“The most important thing is that we’ve won during this streak,” said Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished the game with 35 points and nine assists in the Thunder’s 104-102 victory. “I’ve had a lot of fun playing the last year and a half, probably because I’ve won a lot… If you stay in the right mindset, if you stay together, if you’re connected as a team and just have fun throughout the whole process, you get the best out of things.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive streak began on November 1, 2024, averaging 32.5 points in the 127 games. Celtics player Jaylen Brown acknowledged Gilgeous-Alexander’s consistency, calling it a sign of greatness.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who won the scoring title last season and currently ranks second in the league with 31.8 points per game, is on track to become the first player since Michael Jordan to average at least 30 points per game for four consecutive seasons. His .669 true shooting percentage could tie the highest in league history for a 30-point-per-game scorer, matching Stephen Curry.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised the player’s ambition, highlighting his desire to continuously surpass himself. Chamberlain, for his part, still holds the records for the longest streaks of 30, 40, 50, and 60 points. In addition, he had a streak of 92 consecutive games with at least 20 points, the second longest in NBA history until Gilgeous-Alexander surpassed it. Gilgeous-Alexander’s performance has been fundamental to the success of Oklahoma City, which has a record of 103-24 during his streak. Coach Daigneault emphasized that Gilgeous-Alexander’s individual achievement has not harmed the performance of the team or his teammates.
