Dennis Schröder Suffers Racist Attacks at EuroBasket

The captain of the German national basketball team, Dennis Schröder, was the victim of racist insults during the match against Lithuania in the EuroBasket. The match, which ended with a victory for Germany 107-88, was marred by this regrettable incident. According to the German Basketball Federation, two individuals were identified as the alleged perpetrators of the racist acts and were expelled from the arena in Tampere. Subsequently, FIBA authorities confirmed that one of the fans identified through videos will not be able to attend the rest of the tournament.

Making monkey noises, that’s something I don’t respect. No matter the status, the insults, everything is fine. But racism simply doesn’t belong in this sport. That’s something that’s not okay.

FIBA, for its part, has strongly condemned these acts. In addition, it will meet with the Lithuanian delegation to address what happened.

FIBA unequivocally condemns hate speech, discriminatory conduct and racist language in any form. Creating an inclusive, respectful and safe environment for players, teams and fans remains a fundamental priority of our sport. FIBA has provided the relevant images and information to local law enforcement authorities, who continue to investigate the matter.

FIBA Statement
Schröder, who is Black, heard the insults while heading to the locker room during halftime.

I noticed that Dennis was very upset, and with good reason. Such things have no place in sport or competition. We hope this calms down and can be resolved somehow.

Alan Ibrahimagic, Interim Coach of Germany
Schröder, a player for the Sacramento Kings, led Germany, the current world champion, with 26 points, securing their third consecutive victory in the group. The Germans are already qualified for the round of 16 in Riga, Latvia, regardless of the results of the remaining two matches in Tampere. Ibrahimagic was in charge of the team, replacing Alex Mumbru, who is indisposed, for the third consecutive game in the EuroBasket.
