In a moving event, Gregg Popovich officially passed the torch to Mitch Johnson, marking the beginning of a new era for the San Antonio Spurs.
Popovich, who has been at the helm of the team for years, announced his decision after recovering from a stroke suffered six months ago.
A Generational Change
At the press conference, Popovich expressed that the time was right for this change. “Things are improving day by day, but not enough for what we planned,” he stated.

Popovich, who will now assume the role of team president, was accompanied by Spurs legends such as Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.
“It’s time to make this change.”

The outgoing coach, with a softer voice than usual, assured that his health is improving and that he fully trusts Johnson.
Popovich emphasized that the team’s ideals will not change and that he will continue to support Johnson in his new role. Before introducing Johnson, Popovich took off his jacket, revealing a t-shirt with the phrase “El Jefe”.
Johnson, visibly moved, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his commitment to serve the team.
The presence of current and former Spurs figures, including Victor Wembanyama, added a special touch to the conference.
Johnson highlighted the importance of learning from Popovich, mentioning the coach’s dedication to relationships and his ability to motivate players.
Popovich, the historical leader in NBA victories, recalled the stroke he suffered in November and thanked for the support received during his recovery. He also thanked everyone involved in his rehabilitation and the members of the Spurs organization.
Johnson assured that the fundamental principles of the Spurs, such as integrity and continuity, will remain the basis of the team.
