Basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games: Schedule Revealed

MIES, Switzerland – Organizers confirmed that basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will begin two days before the opening ceremony. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the sport’s global governing body, announced that it has revised the revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that the matches will begin on July 12, 2028, before the opening ceremony on July 14. It is not yet clear whether the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament, or both will begin before the official opening. A preliminary schedule published last month foresees three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13.

This adjustment allows the quarter-finals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no match starts before noon, which will improve the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

The bronze medal matches will be played on July 28 and 29, and the gold medal matches will take place on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the last day of the Games. Other sports are also scheduled to begin before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket, and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to begin on the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony on the same day, about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away. The United States is the current Olympic champion in men’s and women’s basketball. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five in a row.
