Don Nelson Protests Luka Doncic’s Departure from Dallas with Style

Legendary coach Don Nelson, a recognized Hall of Fame member, expressed his discontent over Luka Doncic’s transfer from the Dallas Mavericks, and he did so in a very particular way: by choosing his footwear for the press conference.

Nelson, who was awarded the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, appeared wearing sneakers from the Jordan brand, designed by Doncic himself. The reason behind this choice was clear: to show his support for the player, whom he considers “a dear friend”.

As a matter of fact, I want everyone to know that I am wearing Luka’s shoes, his new Nike shoes that just came out on the market,” Nelson commented. “I am wearing them in protest of the Dallas trade. It was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him, and I want everyone to know that.

The trade of Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis generated a great stir in the league. Although the fury of Dallas fans seems to have diminished after winning the draft lottery and the possibility of selecting Cooper Flagg, the impact of the player’s departure is undeniable.

Nelson, based on the philosophy of Red Auerbach, emphasized the importance of retaining generational players. “When you have a great player, you don’t lose him. You keep him for life, honoring his legacy,” he stated.

Nelson’s reaction is understandable given his deep ties to Dallas, where he coached the Mavericks for eight seasons and his son, Donnie Nelson, was an executive for the team.
