The 2025 NBA Draft Class Makes Its Mark in Summer League

Las Vegas was the epicenter of NBA action over the weekend, with the 2025 Summer League attracting young talents. After tournaments in San Francisco and Salt Lake City, teams and fans were able to evaluate the new prospects in a more competitive environment. The focus was, as expected, on the number one draft pick, Cooper Flagg, and his debut with the Dallas Mavericks. After a difficult first game, Flagg proved his worth with an outstanding performance against Dylan Harper, the second draft pick, scoring 31 points. The Mavericks decided to rest Flagg after his first two games in Las Vegas, but his impact was undeniable. Other players like Harper and VJ Edgecombe also left a good impression, but who else stood out in Sin City?

Flagg: A Potential Offensive Creator

The Mavericks wanted to put the ball in Flagg’s hands to see how he performed as the main offensive initiator. The mission was accomplished successfully. The 18-year-old player took at least 20 shots in both Summer League games, something he only did twice in his only season at Duke.

“I’m exhausted,” Flagg said after his 31-point performance. “I’m not used to bringing the ball up like that, and every time I do, I have someone glued to me the whole court. I’m definitely not used to it, but I think I did a good job of bringing the ball up under pressure and trying to set up our different actions.”

Cooper Flagg
Despite a start with a low shooting percentage, the Mavericks were satisfied with their two performances. Flagg demonstrated a good reading ability and created opportunities for his teammates, despite only recording five assists. He made few mistakes and seemed to adapt to the pressure in real time.

Harper Debuts Against Flagg

After missing some games due to an injury, Dylan Harper, the second selection, returned in time to face Flagg. In 20 minutes of play, Harper demonstrated the skills that positioned him as one of the best prospects. His defense was a highlight, featuring a block in transition. On offense, Harper demonstrated his ability to draw fouls, with a good free throw percentage. Improving his three-point shot will be key to his future in San Antonio.

Essengue: A Project in Development for the Bulls

The Chicago Bulls, by selecting Noa Essengue, knew he was a developing player. His first appearance in the summer league revealed the harsh reality of his talent. Essengue showed improvement in his second game, but the Bulls do not expect him to be a key player next season.

Clifford: A Versatile Player for the Kings

Nique Clifford has proven his worth with a good performance in the first two games, showing his ability to impact the game with his shooting, rebounding, and defense. Clifford, selected by the new Kings management, will have the opportunity to prove his worth from the start of his NBA career.Liam McNeeley (Charlotte Hornets): 22 points and 12 rebounds in his debut.Kasparas Jakucionis (Miami Heat): Showed improvements in his game, with a good shooting percentage and confidence.Noah Penda (Orlando Magic): He excelled in rebounds and steals.Joan Beringer (Minnesota Timberwolves): He showed his potential as a defender.Carter Bryant (San Antonio Spurs): Showed his defensive potential.
