New European Basketball League on the Horizon: NBA and FIBA Cooperate

The NBA and FIBA are collaborating to launch a new basketball league in Europe, with the possibility of it starting its activities in 2027 or 2028. This was announced by NBA commissioner Adam Silver during a conference. Silver called the start in 2027 as “ambitious”, although he did not rule out the possibility. He pointed out that the league could begin to use existing arenas in Europe, pending the construction of a more modern infrastructure.

“I don’t think we want to wait much beyond 2028. The opportunity to do something like this is now,” Silver affirmed.

In March, the NBA and FIBA announced their plans to establish this new European league, ending years of speculation. A significant step was the incorporation of JPMorgan Chase and Raine Group to advise on finance and strategy. Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum have held positive meetings with political leaders, teams, media, and potential investors in Europe, while work continues at the league office to finalize the project. The initial plans contemplate a league with 16 teams, although this number could change. It is likely that European clubs such as Real Madrid, Fenerbahce Istanbul, and Barcelona will be part of the NBA’s plans, along with other major brands. Currently, approximately one in six NBA players is European, including prominent figures. Silver highlighted the growing popularity of basketball worldwide and its importance in Europe, where it is the second most followed sport after football.
