Mavericks center Daniel Gafford to miss several weeks with injury

Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford will be out for two to three weeks due to a sprained ankle suffered during the first preseason practice, according to coach Jason Kidd.

This injury casts doubt on Gafford’s participation in the regular season opener against the San Antonio Spurs, scheduled for October 22.

Gafford already missed the last two months of the 2024-25 season due to a Grade 3 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury he suffered on February 10th.

Since his arrival in Dallas before the 2023 trade deadline, Gafford has averaged 11.9 points with a 72.7% field goal percentage, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks, sharing the starting position with Dereck Lively II.

This summer, Gafford signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension.

On the other hand, P.J. Washington also missed Wednesday’s practice after hitting his head, but Kidd indicated that the veteran forward could return after the team’s day off on Thursday.
