Malik Beasley: Eviction and Legal Issues in the NBA
NBA player Malik Beasley, currently a free agent, is facing serious legal and financial problems that have recently escalated. According to court records, Beasley was evicted from his Detroit apartment last Wednesday. The property owner sued Beasley twice this year in Michigan’s 36th District Court, claiming a total of $21,505 in unpaid rent. Although the first case was dismissed in March, the court issued an eviction order in the second case, for $7,355, due to Beasley’s failure to respond. It is known that Beasley is being investigated in a federal inquiry into gambling, which adds more complexity to his current situation. In the eviction lawsuit, no attorney representing Beasley is listed. Steve Haney, his attorney in the federal gambling investigation, has confirmed that he does not represent him in this matter. Beasley’s recent social media posts indicate that he has been traveling around Europe. Beasley, 28, is the third NBA player to be investigated for allegations related to gambling in the last 18 months by the Eastern District of New York. The accusations against him correspond to the 2023-24 season, when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks. So far, he has not been charged.Beasley was coming off a promising season with the Detroit Pistons and, according to reports, was in talks with the team for a three-year, $42 million contract. However, these negotiations have been suspended. Throughout his nine-year NBA career, Beasley has earned nearly $60 million. In addition to the federal investigation and eviction, Beasley is facing a lawsuit from his former marketing agency, Hazan Sports Management, which alleges that he had difficulty returning a $650,000 advance earlier this year.“An investigation is not an accusation. Malik has the same right to the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the United States Constitution. So far, he has not been charged with anything.”
