Damian Lillard Takes on General Manager Role at Weber State
The renowned basketball player, Damian Lillard, returns to his university roots, but this time in an administrative role. Lillard has been named general manager of Weber State, the university where he shone in his early days. The announcement was made on Saturday night in Ogden, Utah, during the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic, an event organized by Lillard himself. The general manager function has gained popularity in college basketball and football, especially with the changes in the transfer portal and new regulations. Lillard, who was twice MVP of the Big Sky Conference during his three seasons at Weber State, joins the list of prominent figures taking on these types of roles. Before making the jump to the NBA, Lillard left an indelible mark on the university, being the program’s only All-American and ranking at the top in scoring and three-pointers. The university has stated that Lillard will “work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leaders to provide information, mentoring, and guidance, using his collegiate and professional experience to elevate the program.” Lillard, a nine-time NBA All-Star, recently renewed his contract with the Trail Blazers. He is currently recovering from an Achilles tendon injury and is unlikely to play in the 2025-26 season. My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program is very important. I feel like I can do a lot to help the program succeed, to help the players continue to grow in their careers beyond college, that’s something I’m passionate about.
