LeBron James misses the start of training camp due to glute irritation

Lakers star LeBron James was absent from the start of training camp due to a nerve irritation in his glute. Lakers coach JJ Redick confirmed the situation, although he did not rule out James’ participation in at least one preseason game. James, who will turn 41 in December, is about to begin his 23rd season in the NBA. He will become the first player in league history to reach this milestone when the Lakers face the Golden State Warriors in the opening game of next season.

The goal is for James to recover in time for the game against the Warriors.

JJ Redick, Lakers Coach
Redick commented that James’ recovery process will be slower compared to previous seasons. The coach also mentioned that James may have demanded too much in the previous training camp, seeking to demonstrate commitment. James himself stated that he is still in the recovery process and is not in his best physical shape at the moment, but he has time to get in shape before the start of the season. Before the start of the camp, James’ team met with the Lakers’ management, with the instruction to be “extremely cautious” with the player to preserve him for a possible long career in the playoffs. Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Although he initially planned to play all 82 games, he had to sit out for eight days due to discomfort in his left foot. The Lakers will begin their six-game preseason series against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert, California, on Friday. James will not participate in that game, but Redick hopes he can play at least one preseason game. While James watched the training from the bench, guard Austin Reaves highlighted the importance of his presence and leadership on the team. In addition to James, the Lakers also did not have the full participation of Gabe Vincent, Marcus Smart, and rookie Adou Thiero in the first training session. Redick indicated that Vincent will be available for the first preseason game. Regarding the players who did participate in the training, Redick highlighted Luka Doncic’s performance.
