Amidst the signing of the new three-year, $165 million contract with the Lakers, Luka Doncic received a special call.

LeBron James congratulates Doncic

While the ink was still drying on the extension contract, Doncic’s phone began to ring. It was LeBron James, the emblematic figure of the Lakers for the last seven seasons. James congratulated Doncic via video call, according to sources close to the exchange. The call took place after the contract signing and before Doncic participated in a press conference at the Lakers’ training facility on Saturday. Although James was not present at the press conference or on the team’s trip to Las Vegas for the Backstreet Boys concert, the call reaffirmed the support James has shown Doncic since the Lakers surprised the basketball world by acquiring the 26-year-old superstar in February.

Luka has been my favorite NBA player for a while.

The Lakers achieved a 16-7 record in the games in which James and Doncic played together during the regular season. When asked about Doncic’s imminent contract decision after the Lakers’ first-round loss to the Timberwolves, James stated that he wished Doncic would stay. However, he clarified that he would not try to influence his decision.

I obviously hope he stays long-term. Lakers fans love him here. Los Angeles has embraced him. We love him as a teammate, as a brother. But ultimately, he has to make a decision for himself. I won’t be here much longer.

Although James’ feelings towards Doncic have been consistent, James’ situation with the Lakers is not so clear. James opted into the final year of his contract for $52.6 million in June, which set up his 23rd season in the league with the Lakers in 2025-26. However, the statement from his agent and Klutch Sports CEO, Rich Paul, opened the door to speculation about how the final chapter of the four-time champion’s career would unfold.

LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We greatly appreciate the partnership we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers a fundamental part of his career.

Rich Paul, LeBron James’ agent
When asked on Saturday about Paul’s statement and James’ future, Rob Pelinka, president of basketball operations and general manager of the Lakers, stated that the team and James’ environment maintain a good relationship.

All the interactions we’ve had with LeBron and his camp, especially with Rich, have been positive and supportive. The dialogue with [Paul] has been open and constant.

Rob Pelinka
Regarding what comes for James after next season, Pelinka said the team would follow the 40-year-old star’s lead.

I think the most important thing we have to do is respect his and his family’s decision on how much longer he’s going to play. We want to respect his ability to set his schedule. I think that’s really important. But if he had the opportunity to retire as a Laker, that would be great.
