Keegan Murray Secures His Future with the Kings with a Million-Dollar Extension
Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray has agreed to a five-year, $140 million contract extension with the franchise, according to his representatives Mark Bartelstein and Kyle McAlarney of Priority Sports. Murray, selected with the 4th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, secures his long-term stay as a key player in Sacramento through the 2030-31 season. Murray made an immediate impact with the Kings in his first season, being included in the All-Rookie team and helping Sacramento break their playoff drought as a full-time starter. Although his offensive numbers have stabilized since that season, he has shown solid improvement as a defender, an important need for an offensively-inclined Kings team.He is one of three players who have recorded 500 three-pointers, 150 blocks, and 150 steals in the last three seasons, along with Anthony Edwards of Minnesota and Derrick White of Boston. Murray serves as the Kings’ primary perimeter defender, guarding the 2025 All-Stars in 1,005 half-court matchups last season, the fifth-most in the NBA.
In the previous season, Murray averaged 12.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 34.3 minutes in 76 games. The 25-year-old player has maintained remarkable health in the first three years of his career, playing 233 of 246 total games, and starting all but two. However, he will miss at least the first 10 games of this season due to an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb suffered during a preseason game, which required surgery. Murray is one of seven players to make at least 150 three-pointers in each of their first three NBA seasons. His absence means the Kings will be without a key spacer and their most reliable defender in the first month of the season, as they look to compete for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Murray is the sixth player to agree to a rookie extension this year before the deadline of Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
