Jason Collins, Former NBA Player, Battles Brain Tumor

Former NBA player and current league ambassador Jason Collins is receiving medical treatment due to a brain tumor. The news was announced by his family on Thursday.

“Jason and his family appreciate your support and prayers, and kindly request privacy as they focus on Jason’s health and well-being,” the Collins family said in a statement released by the NBA.

Collins, who made history as the first openly gay player in the NBA, retired in 2014 after a 13-year career. During his career, he played for several teams, including the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and again the Nets, now in Brooklyn. In 2013, Collins publicly revealed his homosexuality, marking a milestone as the first openly gay athlete in North American major sports leagues.
