Al Horford: From Boston Celtics to the Golden State Warriors

The change of course for Al Horford has been significant. After seven seasons, including the conquest of the NBA championship in 2024, the veteran player made a difficult decision: to leave the Boston Celtics. With the offseason underway, Horford had two things clear: he wouldn’t retire and, if he had to leave Boston, the Golden State Warriors were the most logical option.

It’s a great opportunity to compete and win at a high level.

Al Horford
During his official presentation with the Warriors, Horford highlighted the presence of key figures such as Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and coach Steve Kerr, in addition to mentioning Jimmy Butler, who joined the team mid-season last year. Horford’s departure from Boston was not an easy decision. He was a player much loved by the fans and the organization, but Jayson Tatum’s injury in the Eastern playoffs changed the landscape. With Tatum out for much of the 2025-26 season, Boston opted to revamp its team, which led to the departure of important players and opened the door for Horford’s arrival at the Warriors. Horford’s arrival at the Warriors seems to fit naturally, both in defense and offense, thanks to his ability to open the court and connect with Curry, Green, and Butler in Kerr’s system.

It’s huge to have a “5” that’s not just anyone, but Al Horford.

Steve Kerr
Kerr praised Horford’s qualities, highlighting his rebounding ability, defense, intelligence, and good passing, which allows him to adapt to any lineup and be a valuable player immediately. Horford’s versatility was key to his success with the Celtics, where, despite his age, he remained a fundamental piece. The Celtics coaching staff carefully managed his minutes to avoid consecutive games. Horford signed a two-year contract with the taxpayer mid-level exception, with a player option for next season. His official presentation was delayed due to the situation of Jonathan Kuminga, whose agreement with the Warriors was recently finalized. Horford admitted that the process this summer was unusual, but he was happy to be with the Warriors and focused on his preparation for the season.
