Chet Holmgren Secures His Future with the Thunder: Max Extension

The Oklahoma City Thunder star and 2025 NBA champion, Chet Holmgren, has reached an agreement for a five-year, fully guaranteed rookie contract extension, which could reach $250 million. This was reported by Bill Duffy of WME Basketball. Holmgren, who returned strongly after a hip injury that kept him out for three months, led the Thunder and their young core towards the NBA championship. The Oklahoma City management is now focused on securing All-NBA superstar Jalen Williams, with whom contract extension talks are also advancing. The Thunder, the second-youngest team in NBA history to win a championship, have secured Holmgren and Finals MVP superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with long-term maximum extensions. Gilgeous-Alexander officially signed a four-year, $285 million contract extension through the 2030-31 season. The Holmgren agreement, guaranteed for $239 million, has clauses that could raise the extension to $250 million. Holmgren, 23, is a fundamental part of the Thunder’s core, with whom he will play and compete for the NBA championship for several years. Holmgren suffered the second significant injury of his NBA career after breaking his pelvis in early November. He also missed his entire rookie season due to a torn ligament in his right foot. Holmgren returned from the pelvic injury shortly before the All-Star break in February and finished the season averaging 15 points, eight rebounds and 2.2 blocks, with 49% field goal shooting and 37.9% on 3-pointers. He played in all 23 games during Oklahoma City’s title run, and his plus-169 plus-minus was the best mark of any player in the 2025 postseason. Known for his great instinct and winning attributes, Holmgren is a key piece in the historic Thunder defense. He contested 93% of opponents’ shot attempts as the closest defender, the second-highest rate in the league since the start of last season, and led the NBA in field goal percentage allowed on layups and dunks last season among players who contested more than 100 shots. Also allowed the lowest field goal percentage (33%) of anyone who defended at least 40 shots in this year’s NBA Finals. Holmgren blocked 11 shots in the Finals alone, including five in Game 7, the most by any player in a Game 7 of the NBA Finals since blocks became official in 1974. He is one of three players with 150 three-pointers and 250 blocks in their first two NBA seasons, along with Victor Wembanyama and Kristaps Porzingis.
