Onyeka Okongwu Suffers Dental Fracture and Will Be Out for the Hawks

Atlanta Hawks player Onyeka Okongwu suffered a dental fracture during the team’s last game after receiving an elbow to the mouth. This injury will keep him off the court, at least, for Thursday night’s game against the Houston Rockets. The incident occurred when Boston guard Jaylen Brown accidentally hit Okongwu with his elbow while they were contesting possession of the ball in the final quarter of Wednesday’s game. After the hit, which resulted in a flagrant foul for Brown, Okongwu, visibly affected and with blood, returned to shoot a free throw before leaving the game. As a result of the impact, Okongwu lost at least one tooth.

It was just a basketball play, it’s unfortunate. Okongwu is a good player, and I understand what it’s like to go through a facial fracture and chipped teeth… It wasn’t intentional and I know he has a long day at the dentist ahead, so I hope he recovers well.

Hawks coach Quin Snyder also commented on Okongwu’s injury after the game.

It’s tough. It’s good that dentistry is a profession. I don’t know what he’s going to need. He’s pretty beat up. He took a good hit. So I told him he’s still handsome, but it’s good that people can fix his teeth, because he’s going to need work.
