Dennis Smith Jr. Returns to the Mavericks on a One-Year Contract

The talented point guard Dennis Smith Jr. has reached an agreement to sign a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, as confirmed by his agent, Daniel Hazan of Hazan Sports Management.

Smith reunites with the franchise that selected him with the 9th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Now, he will compete in the Mavericks’ training camp, who currently have a full roster, although guard Brandon Williams has a partially guaranteed contract.

In his first season and a half with the Mavericks, Smith averaged 15.2 points, a career high, and was named to the 2017-18 All-Rookie team.

In January 2019, he was traded to the New York Knicks as part of the deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas. Smith played for the Knicks from February 2019 to February 2021 and was then transferred to the Detroit Pistons.

Smith has played for several teams in recent seasons, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Brooklyn Nets. In the 2023-24 season, he stood out for being the second NBA player in steals per 36 minutes played, among those with at least 1,000 minutes on the court.

In the 2024-25 season, Smith played with Real Madrid in the EuroLeague.

At 27 years old, Smith has averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3 rebounds in 326 games throughout his seven seasons in the NBA.
