Chris Paul Returns to the Clippers: “An Inevitable Return”

After an eight-year absence, Chris Paul rejoins the Clippers, marking an emotional reunion with the franchise and its fans. The point guard, who last played for the Clippers eight years ago and reached the NBA Finals four years ago, was enthusiastically received at the Intuit Dome.

Nearly a thousand fans gathered to celebrate Paul’s return, who appeared visibly moved. Before the chants of “C-P-3!”, Paul revealed that his return was not only due to the opportunity to play for the team where he was a five-time All-Star and historical leader in assists, but also to the closeness with his family, including his wife, Jada, and his children, Chris Jr. and Camryn, who remained in Los Angeles while he played in five other cities.

It was inevitable. To be honest, I wanted to come back and play here at all costs.

Paul mentioned that, although his departure from the team a decade ago “wasn’t the most ideal,” he maintained constant communication with owner Steve Ballmer. Last summer, before the opening of the Intuit Dome, Paul visited Ballmer, who offered him a personal tour of the new facilities. A little over a week ago, Paul signed a one-year contract for 3.6 million dollars, marking his 21st season in the NBA with the Clippers.

Although he didn’t confirm if the 2025-26 season would be his farewell, Paul expressed his enthusiasm to join the current team. He highlighted the connection with coach Tyronn Lue, his former assistant, and with James Harden, with whom he shared the court in Houston. He also mentioned his relationship with Bradley Beal, with whom he has a long-standing connection.

Paul expressed his excitement about the team’s recent additions, including Beal and Brook Lopez, as well as the young talents. In his 20th season, Paul played all 82 games with the San Antonio Spurs in 2024-25, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. His role with the Clippers is expected to be different, but Paul is willing to adapt and contribute with his experience. Currently, Paul ranks second in assists and steals in NBA history, surpassed only by John Stockton, and 36th in scoring with 23,011 points. The only achievement missing from his impressive career is a championship. Paul came close in 2021 with the Suns, but lost in the Finals against the Bucks. When addressing the fans, Paul promised to give his best and enjoy every moment, expressing his gratitude and commitment to the team.
