Derrick Rose: Tribute to the Bulls Icon

The Chicago Bulls are preparing to honor a legend. The team has announced a ceremony to retire Derrick Rose’s jersey on January 24, 2026.

Rose’s number 1 will ascend to the heights of the United Center, in a post-game ceremony against the Boston Celtics.

This gesture will make Rose the fifth player in franchise history to receive this honor, joining figures like Jerry Sloan (4), Bob Love (10), Michael Jordan (23), and Scottie Pippen (33).

Derrick Rose, a native of Chicago, announced his retirement before the start of the 2024-25 season, culminating a 15-year career in the NBA. His career began when he was selected as number 1 by the Bulls.

During his eight seasons in Chicago, Rose excelled, winning the Rookie of the Year award in 2009 and being named the youngest Most Valuable Player (MVP) in league history in 2011.

In that season, he led the Bulls to the best NBA record, with 62-20, and took them to the Eastern Conference finals, the team’s most significant playoff advance since the Michael Jordan era.

In addition to his time with the Bulls, Rose played for the Knicks, Pistons, Timberwolves, Cavs and Grizzlies, accumulating 723 games in his career and participating in three All-Star Games.

Last January, the Bulls already paid tribute to Rose after his retirement, including the proclamation of “Derrick Rose Day” in Chicago by the city’s mayor. The team’s president and CEO, Michael Reinsdorf, personally informed Rose of the intention to retire his jersey.
