Tampa, Florida.
The Dominican pitcher Luis Gil, despite demonstrating his potential during spring training, will not start the 2026 season in the New York Yankees’ starting rotation.
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed that the team will begin the season with a four-man rotation, a strategy influenced by the scheduled days off in the first weeks of the schedule.
Max Fried, left-handed pitcher, will be in charge of opening the Opening Day against the Giants. The rotation will be completed with Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.
Gil finished Spring Training with an outstanding performance against the Orioles, striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit in five scoreless innings. However, his performance was not enough to secure a spot in the starting rotation.
Matt Blake, pitching coach, explained that the Dominican will remain in Tampa to continue his preparation. The team will evaluate its next options, including a possible assignment to the Minor Leagues or a flexible role in the pitching staff.
“He prefers to be an opener, so it’s a frustrating situation for him, but he understands the context of the team,” Blake noted.
Improvements to your repertoire
During the preseason, Gil showed ups and downs, including a complicated outing against Detroit. However, he managed to recover, showing improvements in his fastball, both in speed and effectiveness.
The right-hander concluded the Grapefruit League with an ERA of 4.66 in 19.1 innings, leaving positive signs for the start of the season.
Calendar-Based Strategy
The decision to start with four starters is due to the structure of the schedule, which includes several days off in the first two weeks. This decreases the immediate need for a fifth pitcher.
According to the technical team, the team will not require a fifth starter until April 11, when they face the Rays.
Pending Definitions in the Bullpen
Meanwhile, the Yankees continue to define their bullpen for the start of the season. There are already six relievers with guaranteed spots, including Dominican Camilo Doval.
The last spots will be disputed by several pitchers, including the Dominican Osvaldo Bidó, in a competition that still does not have a definitive decision.
