Historical Tribute at Guaranteed Rate Field

The Chicago White Sox paid an emotional tribute to Pope Leo XIV, unveiling an artistic installation at Guaranteed Rate Field. This installation commemorates the seat occupied by the Supreme Pontiff during the first game of the 2005 World Series.

The graphic installation, located in Section 140, Row 19, Seat 2, shows an image of the then Father Bob, known as such before being elected pope, greeting the public. The image is complemented by a television capture of the historic moment he shared with his friend Ed Schmit and his grandson Eddie, both fans of the team.

Robert Prevost, a native of Chicago, was elected Pope Leo XIV on May 8th, marking a milestone as the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church. The pontiff is recognized for his missionary work, his closeness to humble communities, and his love for baseball, especially the White Sox.

When people come to the stadium, it’s an interesting part of our history and they’re going to want to see it. We’re going to place a special mark on that seat.

The Pope’s link with the White Sox was sealed in October 2005, when he attended the game in which Chicago defeated the Houston Astros 5-3, heading towards the World Series title.

The Schmit family, who shared that moment with the then-priest, expressed their emotion at the tribute. Heidi Skokal, daughter of Ed Schmit, commented: “My dad always told Father Bob that he would be the next pope. And he would reply that, if he couldn’t be present, he would see it from above. I am sure that he is today.”

The White Sox also sent a personalized jersey and team cap to the Vatican following the official announcement of the election of Pope Leo XIV, reaffirming the city’s affection and pride for one of their own.
