Condemnation for racist insults against Vinícius Jr. in Valladolid

In a case that has generated great attention, five individuals have accepted a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 1,620 euros for uttering racist insults against Vinícius Jr. during a football match in Valladolid.

The events date back to the match played on December 30, 2022, at the José Zorrilla Stadium, where the accused directed offensive expressions at the Real Madrid player.

According to the provisional conclusions of the Prosecutor’s Office, which will be ratified on May 21, the insults occurred around the 88th minute of the match, during the substitution of Vinícius Jr.

The insults, recorded by fans and spread on social media, were intended to humiliate and damage the player’s dignity for racist reasons.

These insults had a great public impact nationally and internationally.

Statement from the Prosecutor’s Office

LaLiga presented a criminal complaint on January 3, 2023, providing audiovisual evidence and requesting the intervention of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Vinícius Jr. has waived compensation for the events, while the accused have acknowledged their actions and apologized.

In addition to the prison sentence and the fine, the defendants have agreed not to attend football matches in public stadiums during the period of suspension of the sentence.

Each of the accused has been convicted of five hate crimes and discrimination.

The sentence includes, in addition to imprisonment and the fine, special disqualification from practicing professions related to education, sports and leisure for a period exceeding three years.

The ruling will be communicated to the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport.
