SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The renowned Brazilian coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to a lung infection, according to sources close to the coach this Friday.
The experienced 73-year-old coach was transferred to a medical center in Palmas, the capital of Tocantins state, after experiencing health problems overnight. Medical examinations confirmed the infection, determining his admission to intensive care, where he is receiving treatment with antibiotics.
Luxemburgo, who coached the Brazilian national team between 1998 and 2000, has a distinguished career in Brazilian football, being considered one of the most successful coaches.
Successful Football Career
Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, Luxemburgo managed important clubs such as Flamengo, Palmeiras, Santos, Cruzeiro, Atlético Mineiro, Grêmio, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama. He also had a brief international experience with Real Madrid in 2005.
His last job as a coach was in 2023 with Corinthians, a team he managed for the third time before being dismissed due to unfavorable results.
Recently, Luxembourg had focused its efforts on politics, announcing its candidacy for the Senate for the state of Tocantins, which represented a new direction in his career.
So far, no further details have been provided about his health condition, while the coach’s environment awaits his recovery.
