United States Beats Mexico in Thrilling World Baseball Classic Duel
HOUSTON – The United States Baseball Team defeated Mexico with a score of 5-3 on Monday night in a vibrant match between two undefeated teams of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, held at Daikin Park in Houston.
The American team had an outstanding performance by right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes, who shone in his tournament debut. Skenes pitched four scoreless innings, achieving seven strikeouts and dominating the Mexican offense in the early innings.
The United States’ offensive also played a crucial role. Aaron Judge, the team captain, hit his second home run of the tournament and made a defensive assist from the outfield. In addition, young Roman Anthony contributed a three-run homer that proved decisive for the final result.
Thanks to this early offensive, the United States managed to get a 5-0 lead, a difference that, although it was reduced, was enough to secure the victory.
Mexico showed its fighting spirit, closing in on the scoreboard with two home runs by Jarren Duran and a run-scoring single by Joey Meneses, which reduced the difference to just two runs and placed the potential tying run on the plate in the ninth inning.
However, reliever Garrett Whitlock managed to close out the game by dominating the last batter, securing the victory for the United States.
With this victory, the United States improves its record to 3-0 in the group stage and is favorably positioned to win Group B and advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The team still has a pending match against Italy.
On the other hand, Mexico, with a 2-1 record, will seek to recover in its next match against Italy, a crucial game for its aspirations to advance to the next phase of the World Baseball Classic.
