NEW YORK – Giancarlo Stanton continues to make positive progress in his recovery from the epicondylitis affecting both elbows. The Yankees’ designated hitter participated this Wednesday in a batting practice session at Yankee Stadium, as part of his process to return to the team.
Stanton, 35, has yet to debut this season due to the discomfort he has had since last year. Despite the pain, he played and was named Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians.
To aid in his recovery, the player received three platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. Although he acknowledges he could have chronic elbow discomfort, Stanton assures he feels fit to compete.
If I’m out there, it’s because I’m well enough to play. There’s nothing more to say
Stanton
Even though the player anticipates needing rehab games in the minor leagues, manager Aaron Boone does not rule out that Stanton could be available at the end of May, when his period on the 60-day injured list ends. The Yankees will begin a West Coast tour against the Angels and Dodgers on that date.
Boone noted that Stanton’s rehab is particular, as he doesn’t need defensive preparation and has been facing pitches from the “Trajekt” machine in recent weeks.
In addition, the Yankees could soon count on the return of Nicaraguan pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga, who was sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as part of his rehabilitation after elbow surgery. Five appearances are planned before his possible return to the big league bullpen at the end of this month.
I’m very excited about what I’ve seen from ‘Lo’. He’s close to returning and it will be very good for us.
Boone
The return of Stanton and Loáisiga would be a great reinforcement for the Yankees in their goal of consolidating themselves as contenders in the American League.
