Spain Recovers First Place in the FIFA Women’s Ranking

The Spanish women’s national soccer team has managed to regain the top spot in the FIFA world rankings, surpassing the United States. This achievement comes after their outstanding participation in the European Championship, where they obtained the runner-up position. Spain, which already led the ranking between December 2023 and June of the same year, now accumulates 2066.79 points, narrowly surpassing the United States, which has 2065.06 points. Sweden rises to third position with 2025.26 points. England, after winning the continental title in the final against Spain on July 27 in Basel, is positioned in fourth place with 2022.64 points, while Germany occupies fifth place with 2011.56 points. In the previous ranking, published on June 12, Spain was in second position with 2034.34 points, behind the United States (2057.19) and ahead of Germany (2030.88). The outstanding performance of the Spanish national team in the European Championship, where they did not suffer any defeats in regulation time, and their goal-scoring ability, allowed them to surpass the United States, which had led the ranking since August 2024. In addition, Bonmatí, along with Irene Paredes, Alexia Putellas, and Patri Guijarro, were included in the ideal eleven.

Reactions and Celebrations

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) expressed its satisfaction with Spain’s return to first place, highlighting its “brilliant” performance in the European tournament and consolidating itself as a world-leading sports project. In a statement, the RFEF highlighted that the team, led by Tomé, has shown sufficient merit to occupy the first position, with “notable results and performances that evidenced great solidity and a unique style of play.” Tom, through a message on X, also expressed his joy for the achievement: “Brilliant work done, with values and professionalism. Thanks to everyone for being able to enjoy it.” The selector will end her contract on July 31st and the RFEF has not yet confirmed whether it will proceed with its renewal.
