Santo Domingo.
Juan Soto, after being awarded the Juan Marichal Award for the second time as the most outstanding Dominican player in Major League Baseball, has confirmed his participation in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, once again defending the colors of his country.
The announcement was made during the awards ceremony, when asked about his availability for the tournament. “Everyone already knows that answer… we are ready,” Soto expressed, making his commitment clear.
This confirmation is a great boost for the Dominican team, led by Albert Pujols, who adds one of the most important figures in world baseball. The news takes on even more relevance after the recent confirmation of Elly de la Cruz’s absence for physical reasons.
Soto, who holds the most lucrative contract in the history of professional sports, thanked the Dominican public for their support during his first season with the Mets. The outfielder emphasized that representing his country was always a primary goal.
I always wanted to wear the Dominican Republic uniform. When I was a child, I represented the country on several occasions and wanted to relive that experience.

Soto recalled his participation in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he played despite physical discomfort, demonstrating his dedication to the national team.
Yainer Díaz is also present
The Astros’ catcher Yainer Díaz has also expressed his intention to represent his country in the World Baseball Classic, responding positively to the call.
Yes, I am willing to participate. Albert Pujols already spoke with me and we are positive about that.
Díaz is emerging as one of the main options for the national team’s receiving position. Currently, he is in the process of physical conditioning, preparing with the Leones del Escogido in the autumn-winter tournament, after receiving more than 15,800 pitches in the last Major League season.
With these confirmations, the Dominican selection ensures the presence of two outfielders (Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr.), a third baseman (Manny Machado) and a starting catcher in Díaz.
The Azuano receiver highlighted the excitement of receiving the personal call from Pujols and announced that they will coordinate defensive work, a position in which Agustín Ramírez and Samuel Basallo also appear.
Both Soto and Díaz are training in the Dominican Republic. Soto, who finished 2025 with his sixth consecutive Silver Slugger, his second All-MLB Team selection, and the best offensive WAR in the National League (7.0), awaits authorization to join the Tigres del Licey.
Díaz, for his part, has already participated in four games with the Escogido, standing out with a two-run home run in his debut, during the 15-1 victory against the Tigres.
