Sheinbaum Assures Security for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has stated that there is “no risk” for visitors attending the host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite recent events of violence in Jalisco. During her daily conference, the president stated that all security conditions are guaranteed, especially in Guadalajara, one of the tournament venues. In this city, blockades and armed clashes were recorded after the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Incidents decreased considerably after the initial events, and work is being done to normalize activity in the region. The president also pointed out that the presence of federal forces has been intensified and constant work is maintained to ensure security and peace. Mexico will host the opening match of the World Cup on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, as well as hosting matches in Guadalajara and Monterrey. Sheinbaum emphasized that the operation that resulted in the death of the criminal leader does not represent a change in the government’s security strategy, which focuses on addressing the causes of violence and the strict application of the law. The Attorney General’s Office confirmed the identity of Oseguera Cervantes after forensic analyses. The criminal leader, 59 years old, was wanted by Mexican and U.S. authorities, who offered a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture. The authorities reiterated that preparations for the World Cup are continuing as planned and the necessary measures will be maintained to ensure the safety of all participants during the event.
